Soccer Monarchs Honored At Sold Out Basketball Game

NORFOLK, VA--- The ODU Soccer Monarchs were honored for their outstanding season at the Jan. 11th men's basketball game in front of a sold out (8,472) Ted Constant Convocation Center.

Head coach Alan Dawson, the winningest coach in ODU soccer history won his 300th career collegiate game in the Monarchs CAA semi-final win over Georgia State.The Monarchs compiled a 12-6-2 record finished second in the CAA regular season, reached the CAA Championship match and for the eighth time in 10 years advanced to the second round of the NCAA College Cup.

All-American junior forward Yannick Smith was been named VaSID Men's Soccer Player of the Year as selected by the Virginia sports information Director's Association. In all, five Monarchs, Tommy Webb, Yannick Smith, Victor Francoz, Gideon Asante and Tim Hopkinson were selected to the All-State squad.

Smith, a semifinalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy led the CAA in goals with 16 and scoring with 34 total points. The first team All-CAA forward ranked 12th nationally in scoring and ninth in goals. Smith was named third-team All-American by the NSCAA and College Soccer News.

Asante, a midfielder led the Monarchs with nine assists and added seven goals and 23 total points, and was a first Team All-CAA selection. He ranked 17th nationally in total assists and was named second team All-Region.

Victor Francoz, a junior goalkeeper registered six shutouts along with a 1.38 goals against average and a .754 saves percentage. Francoz was a second team All-CAA selection, and ranked 24th nationally with 86 total saves. He was a first team All-region selection

Hopkinson, a sophomore forward led ODU win game winning goals with four as he scored 10 on the season along with eight assists for 28 totals points. He ranked 24th nationally in goals scored and 20th Nationally in assists. Hopkinson was a second team All-CAA and All-Region selection.

Senior defender Tommy Webb, was selected to the second team All-State squad, and wasalso an All-CAA selection.
