NORFOLK, Va. - On a hot February day, Old Dominion University men's tennis blazed by the Norfolk State Spartans en route to a 7-0 win Wednesday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center.
Old Dominion University got its first win of the young season Wednesday and they are currently 1-3.
"It was great to see our guys come out with a lot of intensity and they put the pressure on and ran away with some matches," head coach Aljosa Piric said. "Norfolk State came to play and there were also a lot of tough matches."
The match started with a doubles victory headlined with wins by Carlos Lopez-Villa and Alfredo Rodriguez at No. 3 doubles while Krzysztof Muzalewski and Wesley Barrett were winners at No. 2 doubles. Can Cetinel and Fahoum Fahoum dropped their doubles match 8-4 to Ben Marks and Arsenio Culver at No. 1 doubles.
In singles play, Alfredo Rodriguez, Wesley Barrett, and Can Cetinel set the tempo by getting fast victories winning in straight sets (6-2, 6-1), (6-0, 6-1), and (6-0, 6-3) respectively.
Krzysztof Muzalewski and Fahoum Fahoum continued the straight set victory for the Monarchs winning (6-4, 6-4) and (6-3, 6-4) over Ben Marks and Igor Braga correspondingly. The final match of the day was an intensely fought match by Carlos Lopez Villa and Arsenio Culver. After dropping his first set 4-6 and rebounding in the second 6-4, Lopez-Villa secured the team sweep for Old Dominion by winning 11-9 in the final tiebreaker.
The Monarchs will take on the Winthrop Eagles at 10 A.M. Saturday, February 4 at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Facility.
