BATTLE FOR THE SILVER MACE

Beginning this year there is a new tradition between ODU and William and Mary; twostaples of the Colonial Athletic Association. During the athletic season of 2011-12 thishistoric rivalry will come to a pinnacle in the "Optima Health Challenge." Sponsoredby Hampton Roads based Optima Health, the trophy will be presented annually to theschool which accumulates the most points in head-to-head competitions in all sports.Along with the all sports challenge, the annual football contest will be the "Battlefor the Silver Mace", with the winner presented a replica of the Norfolk Mace. TheMace is currently being held in the Chrysler Museum of Art, located in DowntownNorfolk. The Norfolk Mace was presented in the Norfolk Common Council by Royal Lt.Governor Robert Dinwiddle in 1754 to acknowledge that Norfolk was one of the mostloyal provinces to King William.

The Monarchs won the first meeting in the now annual "Battle for the Silver Mace" inWilliamsburg on Nov. 12th with a 35-31 victory.

Points Format:
During the year, the CAA foes will face off 15 times, with each event being worth 10points. The Monarchs and Tribe will compete head-to-head in football, men's andwomen's basketball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women'stennis, field hockey, baseball, and women's lacrosse. With the potential of meetingalso in CAA tournaments. The winner will be the first to reach 80 total points.
