ODU loses To Richmond In Overtime, 90-82

RICHMOND, VA-- Kent Bazemore scored 20 and Chris Cooper added a career high 21, but the Monarchs lost in overtime to Richmond, 90-82, behinda career high 38 points by Darien Brothers.

Brothers was 9-for-15 from the floor, 7-for-11 from three-point range and 13-14 from the free throw line.

ODU's Bazemore became the 48th Monarch to join the 1,000 career point club at ODU with his first basket at the 11th minute mark of the first half.

Richmond led by as many as 15 in the first half, 28-13 with 9:45 remaining. TheMonarchs cut the lead to three, 33-30 after a Chris Cooper basket with 3:35 leftin the half. Darien Brothers then hit a three and another basket along with a layupby Derrick Williams to give the Spiders a 40-32 halftime lead.

The Monarchs started the second half off on a 13-7 run and cut the Spider lead totwo at 47-45 with 13:50 left on a jumper by Dimitri Batten. With 9:58 left the Monarchs took its first lead, 53-52 on a layup by Trian Iliadis.

ODU led by three, 57-54 after a tip-in by Chris Cooper with 7:46 left and kept thelead until Darien Brothers hit two free throws with 4:42 left to give the Spidersthe lead again at 63-62. In the final three minutes of the game, the contest wastied four times.

With the score tied at 68, Dimitri Batten hit a free throw to complete a three-pointplay and give ODU a 69-68 lead with 31 seconds left, but Brothers hit a three-pointbank shot to give UR a 71-69 lead with 14 seconds left. After the Monarchs missed,Derrick Williams hit one of two free throws to give UR a three-point 72-69 lead withnine seconds left.

The Monarchs called timeout and senior Kent Bazemore nailed a trey from well beyond the arch to tie the game with two seconds left and send it to overtime. This wouldbe ODU's third extra period of the season.

In the extra period, Brothers got the Spiders going with a four-point play and the Spiders hit 11 of 15 free throws to hold off the Monarchs for the win.

ODU played the entire overtime without Chris Cooper who fouled out with 52 seconds left in regulation.

ODU outrebounded Richmond, 35-28 as Kent Bazemore and red-shirt freshman Richard Ross both hauled down eight rebounds. Cooper added seven boards. Darius Garrett led UR with 13 rebounds and a game high eight blocked shots.

The Monarchs also shot .478 (32-67) from the floor. It was ODU's second bestshooting performance this season, the best was .484 against LIU. The Spiders were .595 (25-42) from the field as well as hitting 11 treys. Besides Brothers 38, Derrick Williams added 18 points, and Cedrick Lindsay scored 13 for Richmond.

Red-shirt freshman Dimitri Batten scored 13 for ODU, while Marquel De Lancey andTrian Iliadis both added nine points. Iliadis and Bazemore also came up with threesteals each.

The Monarchs return home thursday night when they play VMI at 7 p.m.
