RICHMOND, Va. - After winning the first round competition against schools such as the University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University, a team of Old Dominion University business students finished second in the regional College Fed Challenge competition in Richmond.
The students, under the direction of team coach Chip Filer, M.B.A. program director in the College of Business and Public Administration, made two trips to the state capital in November to compete against the brightest student business minds at universities in the mid-Atlantic.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond sponsors College Fed Challenge to encourage a better understanding of the nation's central bank, the forces influencing economic conditions in the United States and abroad, and the ways the economy affects everyone's lives.
In College Fed Challenge, teams give 15-minute presentations on monetary policy, and are judged on content, teamwork, responses to questions, presentation and style.
"Though we were not victorious in the regional final, this team represented ODU very well," Filer said.
Team members were Ayush Toolsidass, Krzysztof Muzalewski, Patrick Murdock, Kevin Squires, Jacob Richardson and Christopher Watson.
After defeating 14 other teams to advance to the regional finals, ODU faced the University of North Carolina and Loyola University of Baltimore, winners of contests sponsored by the Baltimore and Charlotte branches of the Fed. UNC was selected as the winning team and advanced to the national Fed Challenge, held at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in Washington, D.C.
The Richmond Fed, one of 12 District Reserve Banks that make up the Federal Reserve System, serves the Fifth Federal Reserve District, which encompasses the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and most of West Virginia.
