Monarchs Defeats South Florida, 68-66 In HOF Tip-Off

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Kent Bazemore came off the bench to score 23 points and grab nine rebounds as Old Dominion beat South Florida 68-66 Saturday in overtime in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament.

ODU will meet second ranked Kentucky Sunday at 12 noon on ESPNU. The victory givesODU a 5-3 record against the BIGEAST under Blaine Taylor.

Bazemore, whose time has been limited after foot surgery in August, scored 16 points after halftime for the Monarchs (3-1), who trailed for much of the game.

Dimitri Batten added 12 points and Chris Cooper had 10 for ODU, which won its third straight after a season-opening loss to Northern Iowa.

Trailing 20-14 with 9:34 left in the first half, ODU reeled off 10 straight points, taking a 22-20 lead on a layup by Batten with 5:56 left.

USF regained the lead on a tip in by Hugh Robertson for a 34-32 lead with 48 seconds left followed by a layup at the buzzer by Blake nash for a 36-32 halftimescore.

In the second half South Florida led by six, 47-41 with 10:13 left, but the Monarchsrallied to take a one point lead, 52-51 on two free throws by Kent Bazemore with5:09 left in the game.

With 14 seconds left,ODU's Kent Bazemore hit one of two free throws for a 63-60lead, but Shaun Noriega hit a trey with five seconds left to tie the game. TrianIlaidis three-pointer missed sending the contest into overtime. ODU played no overtime contests last year.

USF scored first on a tip-in by Augustus Gilchrist for a 65-63 lead, but Iliadistied the game at 65 on a driving layup. Kent Bazemore hit two free throws fora 67-65 lead. USF's Nash hit one of two free throws with 33 seconds left and ODUstill had a one-point lead, 67-66.

After two missed ODU free throws, Gilchrist missed a jumper for the Bulls, followedby one of two free throws made by Marquel De Lancey to give ODU a 68-66 lead withtwo seconds left as Rudds' last second from beyond halfcourt missed giving the Monarchs the win.

Augustus Gilchrist scored 18 points and Victor Rudd Jr. had 16 for South Florida (3-1), which had its chances in overtime.

ODU finished the night at .462 (24-52) from the field and 14 steals on the day ledby the CAA's Defensive Player of the Year Kent Bazemore with a career high seven,followed by Batten with three and Iliadis with two. Both teams had 30 rebounds eachwith Victor Rudd of USF with seven, and Bazemore with a game high nine.

ODU and Kentucky have met only once before. The Wildcats beat ODU, 86-69 in theNCAA first round at Worcester, Mass in 1992. This will be ODU's first top 10 opponent since playing 10th ranked Missouri last year in Columbia, MO. The last topfive opponent was top-ranked North Carolina in 2007-08 in Las Vegas. ODU'slast win over a Nationally ranked team was a 61-57 win at 11th ranked Georgetownin 2009-10 season.
