WILMINGTON, N.C. - ODU's Yesim Giresunlu and Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) both set pool records in day one swimming action as the Monarch and Lady Monarch swimming and diving teams take on UNC-Wilmington and Richmond this weekend.
The ODU men currently lead the 10-time Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship UNC-Wilmington Seahawks, 94.5-90.5. On the women's side, the Seahawks lead the Lady Monarchs 53.00-33.00, while ODU holds a 45.00-41.00 lead over Richmond.
Arnason led the Monarchs with a three victories, picking up wins in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, and in swimming the second leg of the 400 medley relay. Arnason clocked in with a time of 1:52.80, over six seconds faster than second place, in the 200 IM, while he set a new Seahawk Natatorium record with a time of 55.35 in the 100 breast.
Arnason together with Andrew Crockett, Dan Chalifant, and Sidni Hoxha won the 400 medley relay clocking in at 3:25.35.
Also joining Arnason with individual event victories were sophomore Sidni Hoxha (Tirane, Albania) in the 50 freestyle (21.10) and classmate Daniel Camozzo (Herndon, Va.) in the 200 freestyle (1:43.75).
For the ODU women, Giresunlu, a native of Turkey, made her Lady Monarch debut by setting a new Seahawk Natatorium record in the 1650 freestyle. She won the event with a time of 16:59.70, the fourth fastest time in the ODU record books.
Also earning individual event wins for the Lady Monarchs were newcomer Savannah Bowers in the 200 freestyle (1:54.75), as well as Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland) in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.66).
The Monarchs and Lady Monarchs conclude action tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m.
