HARRISONBURG, Va. - Old Dominion University women's soccer came up just short Sunday, falling behind 3-0 early before battling back, but dropping a 3-2 decision at James Madison.

After falling behind by three goals in the first 23 minutes, ODU got on the board when Jocelyn Weidner connected on from 40-yards out on a free kick to close the gap to 3-1.

Just seven minutes into the second half, Victoria Johnson cut the gap even more, scoring from 16 yards out off a pass from Kate Kelly.

In the 79th minute, Amber Cook fired a shot that missed the goal, Johnson was there for the rebound but was ruled offsides to negate the goal.

ODU got off shots from Kelly Evans and Weidner in the final two minutes but neither were on target as JMU escaped with the win.

The Dukes got on the board in the sixth minute when Jessica Barndt scored on a header off a throw-in from BEcky Sparks.

JMU made it 2-0 on a Lauren Wilson tally and pushed the lead to three on another Wilson goal.

In the fifth minute, JMU was awarded a penalty kick that was taken by Kelly Germain that was stopped by Brianna Alvarado.

The Lady Monarchs outshot JMU 22-12 while James Madison held a 9-6 lead in corners.

Johnson and Lisa Bernardini had five shots apiece for ODU while Wilson had four for the Dukes.

Alvarado made six stops for ODU with Marlee Stynchula making four saves for JMU.

ODU returns home for the regular-season finale on Friday, Oct. 28 when they host William and Mary at 7 p.m.
