NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion field hockey team has opened its season against four Top 10 opponents and after Sunday's 4-1 win over No. 3 Virginia, the Lady Monarchs remain perfect.

Senior Kathryn Kirk netted a pair of goals and 12th-ranked ODU raced out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back on a beautiful day at the Powhatan Sports Complex. Old Dominion (4-0) put together an impressive weekend by knocking off No. 1 Maryland and No. 3 Virginia by a combined score of 8-1.

The win makes Lady Monarchs 33-12 all-time against the Cavaliers.

Old Dominion didn't waste anytime getting on the scoreboard as junior Maartje van Rijswijk blasted a shot that was saved, but Kirk gathered the rebounded and scored just 33 seconds into the game.

Both defenses seemed to be taking control of the contest until the 23rd minute. Junior Christy Longacre scored off a penalty corner at the 23:14 mark and just over a minute later, van Rijswijk netted her first goal of the season.

In the second half the Lady Monarchs continued to pressure the Cavaliers and in the 56th minute Kirk caused a turnover in UVA's zone and she beat the keeper in a one-on-one chance to put ODU up 4-0.

Virginia would score off a penalty corner at the 63:13 mark, but would not threaten from that point.

Old Dominion outshot UVA 12-5 and had a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Devon Seifert improves to 4-0 on the year and now boats a 1.29 goals against average.

Up next for the Lady Monarchs is a pair of games in Columbus, Ohio. ODU will face No. 5 Syracuse on Saturday, Sept. 10 and then will take on No. 6 Ohio State the following day. Both games are scheduled for 2 p.m.
