Old Dominion Sailing Wins Edward Teach Memorial

HAMPTON, VA. - The Old Dominion sailing team won its first regatta of the 2011-12 season this past weekend, besting a nine-team field at the Edward Teach Memorial in Hampton.

In total, the Monarchs won an impressive 14 of 19 races, including eight in the A-Division. William and Mary finished second and host Hampton was a close third.

Skipper Mark Miedama and crew Colin Voigt dominated the top-division, while Robert Allen and Haley Garst posted six wins in the B-Division. No ODU boat finished lower than third in any of the 18 races.

Old Dominion also participated in the Nevins Trophy Regatta in Kings Point, N.Y. The Monarchs finished in 12th out of 20 schools competing.

The Monarchs' best showing came in C-Division singlehanded sailing where senior skipper Gavin Rudolph claimed ninth. Scott Hoffmann and Emily Reich claimed 11th in B-Division racing, while skipper Dillon Paiva finished 15th in the A-Division along with crew members Chloe Constants and Brady Stagg.

The ODU Sailing Monarchs return to action this coming weekend, competing in a trio of events. Old Dominion will travel to Kings Point, N.Y. for the MAISA Laser Qualifier, visit St. Mary's College for the St. Mary's Intersectional and return to Annapolis, Md. for the MAISA Women's Singlehanded Regatta.
