DURHAM, N.C. - The second-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team used a Kati Nearhouse goal in the second overtime period to defeat No. 6 Duke, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Williams Field in Durham, N.C. The Lady Monarchs (8-0) improve to 4-0 against Atlantic Coast Conference teams on the year.
ODU senior Emma Batten tallied her team-high 10th goal of the season and dished out an assist in the victory. The Lady Monarchs also got a score from junior Maartje van Rijswijk.
Duke, which got a pair of goals from sophomore Emmie Le Marchand, falls to 5-3 on the year.
The first half was tightly contested until Old Dominion broke the scoreless tie at the 29-minute mark. Batten stole the ball from a Blue Devils defender and blasted a mid-level shot on the right side past the keeper.
Duke leveled the game at one with Le Marchand's first goal of the day in the 42nd minute. Old Dominion was quick to respond though as van Rijswijk received as pass from Batten in front of the cage and posted her second goal of the season just over a minute later.
Le Marchand again tied the game off a deflection in front of the cage for her second goal of the day in the 56th minute.
The score would remain tied at two through the end of regulation and the conclusion of the first 15-minute sudden victory overtime period. Halfway through the second overtime session, ODU was able to break through the Duke defense as Batten got the ball to Kathryn Kirk, who delivered a pass to Nearhouse, who scored from four yards out.
Old Dominion outshot the Blue Devils 17-8 for the game, including a 7-1 advantage in the two overtime periods. The Lady Monarchs held a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners.The contest was ODU's first overtime game of the season. The Lady Monarchs hadn't participated in a double-overtime game since topping Drexel in last year's Colonial Athletic Association Championship game.
ODU has now opened its season with seven victories over Top 10 teams in its first eight games.
The Lady Monarchs begin Colonial Athletic Association play at home next weekend against Hofstra and Northeastern.
