NORFOLK, VA. - The Old Dominion University sailing team kicked off its 2011-12 season this past weekend, competing in three different regattas. The Monarchs hosted the Riley Cup in Norfolk and claimed fourth-place, while Gavin Rudolph and Corina Radtke were ODU's top finishers in singlehanded events that took place in Annapolis, Md.
At the Riley Cup, Old Dominion had two boats (Monarchs & Big Blue) in the regatta. The Monarchs team was led by sophomore skipper Brady Stagg and sophomore crew Julia Wiesner. The duo did not finish out of the Top 5 in the 16-team field and they won the sixth race to claim third in the A-Division.
Junior skipper Zachary Runci and sophomore crew Haley Garst combined for a pair of Top 5 results and they would finish no worse than ninth in claiming sixth-place for the Big Blue team in A-Division racing.
Freshman Evan Hoffmann and sophomore Jill Fattibene claimed fifth in B-Division action for the Monarchs, while freshman Jake Spracher and sophomore Alexa Cavalieri finished seventh in the Big Blue boat.
At the Laser South Fall regatta, three Monarchs finished in the Top 11 out of 20 competitors. Rudolph and teammate Collin Leon finished tied with 70 points after nine races, but Rudolph held the tiebreaker to claim fourth. Sophomore Scott Hoffmann finished 11th overall.
At the Radial Open, Radtke led four Lady Monarchs in the 17-person field by finishing 11th. Radtke posted four Top 10 finishes and won the second race.
The Old Dominion sailing team returns to the water September 17-18, competing in the Nevins Trophy Regatta and the Edward Teach Memorial.
