NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion field hockey team kicked off its 2011 season with an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the Powhatan Sports Complex. Current players mixed with alumni to compete for two 35 minute halves and a brief overtime period.
Freshman Lydia Velzian tallied a pair of goals, while senior Kathryn Kirk and sophomore Kati Nearhouse each dished out two assists to lead the white squad to an 8-1 win. Junior Danielle Clutter, senior Rebecca Condie, junior Maartje van Rijswijk, junior Christy Longacre, senior Emma Batten and Kirk also scored for the white squad.
Notable alumni in attendance included Honda Award winners Mimi Smith and Tiffany Snow-Huisman. Snow-Huisman will be inducted into the ODU Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, Oct. 15. Members of the 2010 CAA Champion field hockey team in attendance included Amanda Bieber, Anna Kern, Paige Clutter, Sami Richardson, Alyschia Conn and All-American Loran Hatch. Current assistant coach Katelyn Smither, Kathleen Shea and Sami McLenegan rounded out the former Lady Monarch greats in attendance.
