Six Monarchs Earn VaSID Academic All-State Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Old Dominion University placed six student athletes on the 2011 Virginia Sports Information Directors Association Academic All-State team as released today. Trian Iliadis (Men's Basketball), Adam Roscioli (Men's Soccer), Amanda Bieber (Field Hockey), Kristofer Hagg (Men's Swimming & Diving), Alyssa Pietrobono (Women's Soccer) and Phil McCarthy (Baseball) were selected.

A total of 30 schools and 180 student-athletes (six per school) from the commonwealth are honored for their academic performance this past school year. Here is a brief biographical sketch on the award winners.

Alyssa Pietrobono (Sr. Newark, DE.) Appeared in 12 games, with two starts. She has won several academic awards during her collegiate career, including the Dehardi Alumni Scholarship, the Goodman Award and the Tidewater Chapter VSCPA Outstanding Accounting Student Award. She will graduate with a perfect 4.0 grade point average in accounting. She is the 2011 recipient of the ODU Jack Wilkins/James Howard Female Scholar Athlete of the Year award.

Trian Iliadis, Jr., Perth, Western Australia/Gwelp - Old Dominion (men's basketball) A junior majoring in biochemistry, Iliadis was selected to the CAA men's basketball All-Academic first team for the second year in a row in 2010-11. He was also named CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's basketball. He was named first team Academic All-District III by CoSIDA. He is a Dean's List student who received the CRC Press Chemistry Achievement Award. On the court, Iliadis played in all 34 games for an ODU squad that went 27-7 and captured the CAA championship for the second year in a row. The Monarchs' guard averaged 6.0 points per game this season and led the team with 41 three-pointers. He scored a season-high 15 points in an impressive non-conference victory over Dayton and poured in 10 points in ODU's win over VCU in the CAA championship game.

Kristofer Hagg, Sr., Skovde, Sweden/Volvo - Old Dominion (men's swimming & diving) A senior who is majoring in electrical engineering technology, Hagg is a three-time recipient of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award and is a Dean's List student at ODU. He was named CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's swimming and diving last month. In the pool, Hagg placed 16th in the 200 freestyle at the 2011 CAA Championship and swam the anchor leg on the Monarchs' fifth-place 800 free relay squad. He also finished 18th in the 500 freestyle and 19th in the 1650 freestyle at the conference meet. Hagg has twice earned All-CAA honors in the 800 free relay and was a member of the Monarchs' squad that set a school record in the event in 2009.

Amanda Bieber , Sr., Elizabethtown, PA.) is a Dean's List student at ODU and a three-time CAA Commissioner's Academic Award recipient. The senior biology major has been named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad for the past three years and was selected to the 2009 Mid-Atlantic High Performance Training Squad. Last December, Bieber was named CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year for Field hockey. On the field this season, Bieber anchored an ODU defense that posted seven shutouts and limited five other opponents to only one goal. Three of the shutouts came against nationally ranked foes (Boston U., Drexel and Michigan). The Lady Monarchs captured their 14th CAA championship in 2010 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Adam Roscioli (Sr. Forest, VA.), a defender and co-Captain on the Monarchs soccer squad where he was a two-time first Team CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. Nominated for the Lowes' Senior Award, Roscioli was named to the VCU/ Marriott Classic All-Tournament squad, and helped the Monarchs defeat second ranked North Carolina and advance to the second round of the NCAA College Cup with a win over defending national champion Virginia. Roscioli will graduate with a 3.91 grade point average in exercise science. Adam shared the 2011 ODU Jack Wilkins/James Howard Male Scholar Athlete of the Year award with swimming and diving's Kristofer Haag.

Phil McCarthy, Jr., Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge - Old Dominion (baseball) A junior majoring in exercise science and pre-med, McCarthy is a Dean's List student and a three-time recipient of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award. Last month, McCarthy was named CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year for baseball. He was one of the Monarchs' top starting pitchers this season, posting a 9-4 record with a 4.05 ERA. The right-hander tossed 95.2 innings and struck out 61 batters. McCarthy, who earned a spot on the 2011 CAA All-Tournament team, was 7-3 with three complete games against CAA foes this season. He fanned a season high nine in a win at Georgia State and eight in ODU's CAA Tournament elimination game win over UNC Wilmington which put the Monarchs in the championship game against JMU.
