NEWARK, DE-Junior shortstop Josh Wright's (Bridgewater, VA.) two-run homer in the top of the ninth broke a 5-5 tie to lead the Monarchs of Old Dominion to a 7-5 come-from behind victory over Delaware Friday at Bob Hannah Stadium.
ODU is now 22-20 overall and 14-8 (.636) in the CAA, with a share of the leaguelead with idle James Madison who is 15-9 (.625) in league play. Georgia State (13-8 in CAA )played at UNCW later tonight. Delaware drops to 26-20 overall and 15-10 in CAA play.
In the ninth, Brandon Shelton got a one out double and with two outs, Wright slammed his 11th homerof the season over left field.
ODU tied the game with four runs in the seventh as Brent Frazier's ground ball was misplayed at third allowing both Josh Tutwiler (Bridgewater, VA.) and Kenny Stoneback (Colonial Heights, VA.) to score. Josh Wright followed with a single to plate Brandon Shelton (Chesapeake, VA.) and Chris Baker's (Chesapeake, VA. )groundout scored Frazier to tie the game at 5-5.
ODU senior outfielder Nate Hartman (Orlando, Fl.) belted his fifth homer of the season, a solo shot over rightfield in the third inning.
ODU starter and winner Kyle Hald (Springfield, VA.) fanned six with eight hits, five walks but retiredthe last six Blue Hen batters he faced. Senior reliever Adam Wisniewski (Norfolk, VA.) picked up hisCAA leading 11th save with two strikeouts in the ninth and a groundout after Delaware's first two hittersreached on base hits.
Delaware got on the board first thanks to a two out double by Steve Ulaky and four consecutivewalks which forced home Ulaky and Nick Ferdinand for a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
In the fourth Pat Dameron's two-out double scored both Dave Anderson and Hank Yates for a 4-1 Blue Hen lead. Nick Ferdinand then hit a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the fifth.
Wright led ODU with three hits and three RBI on the day, while Brandon Shelton and Nathan Hartman had two hits each. Delaware was led by Pat Dameron with two hits and two RBI along with Steve Ulaky,Nick Ferdinand and Dave Anderson with two hits each.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 1 p.m.
