CASCADE LOCKS, Ore. - Old Dominion senior skipper Stephanie Roble was named an Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) All-American for the second straight year. The Women's All-America team was announced Thursday evening at the Sperry Top-Sider/ICSA Women's National Championships banquet.
The prestigious awards are a highlight of the collegiate sailing year. The Women's College Sailor of the Year and the All-American honors are chosen by a committee of representatives from each of the seven ICSA districts. The ICSA All-America committee evaluates with great detail all of the finalists' results and calculates the winner.
Roble, who garnered Honorable Mention All-American honors in 2009 and All-American accolades in 2010, completed her stellar women's career by guiding the Lady Monarchs to a sixth-place finish at the women's national championships this year. Roble and junior crew Emily Reich posted three Top 5 finishes, including a win in the opening race, to finish seventh in A-Division sailing.
The senior will be back in action May 30-June 1 as Old Dominion competes in the ICSA/Gill Co-ed National Championships in Oregon.
The guidelines for All-America selection evaluate a competitor based on their competitive record in District and North American Championships. Beyond that the committee analyzes how this record compares to fellow competitors, the quality of the competition the record was achieved in, the span of the record over the fall and spring seasons, results achieved with different crews, and how the record compares to previous All-American winners in previous years. It is possible to select fifteen winners between the All-Americans and Honorable Mention All-Americans, which was the case this year. Below is a list of last night's honorees.
