ODU Spilts Doubleheader With Hofstra To Gain No. 2 seed

HEMPSTEAD, NY---Junior firstbaseman Chris Baker knocked in four runs and went five- for- five to help Old Dominion (28-24/19-11) win game two of the doubleheader, 8-4. Junior righthander Phil McCarthy picked up the win (8-4). In the first game Taylor Stuart's two out single in the 10th inning brought home Jared Hammer as Hofstra defeated the Monarchs, 6-5.

The loss ended ODU's eight straight CAA series win streak and will make the Monarchs the number two seed in next week's Conference Tournament in Wilmington, NC. ODU will play UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m. on May 26th and top-seeded James Madison will play fourth seeded Georgia State at 3 p.m.

IN GAME TWO Chris Baker and Shawn Sizemore had back-to-back hits in the first inning to give ODU a 2-0 lead.

In the second inning Brent Frazier belted a three-run homer with Brandon Shelton and Edgar Hernandez aboard.

Chris Baker belted his ninth homer of the year (second of the day) with Josh Wright aboard in the fifth. Baker later singled home Josh Wright in the seventh for a 8-1 lead.

Hofstra got on the score board in the fifth when Logan Davis singled home T.J. Thomas.

In the bottom of the seventh Bryan Verbitzky doubled home Kenny Jackson and Logan Davis, then Taylor Stewart singled home Verbitsky to make it 8-4.

Phil McCarthy picked up his eighth win (8-4), giving up nine hits, one walk and striking out five.

Relievers Erick Baker, Ben Verlander and Louis Singleton pitched the last two innings of shutout ball.

Baker is now hitting .302 with nine homers and 58 RBI and 21 doubles on the yearafter hitting .571 with two homers, six RBI and three doubles for the weekendseries.

IN GAME ONEChris Baker put ODU up first with a solo homer over the right centerfield fence, his eighth of the season.

In the sixth Baker singled home Shelton and Josh Wright then scored on a error. Baker later scored from second on another Pride throwing error off Shawn Sizemore's hit, for a 4-0 lead.

In the seventh inning T.J. Thomas doubled with the bases loaded to score Hammer, Perez and A'Hara to cut ODU's lead to 4-3.In the eighth inning freshman Joey Burney singled in Chris Baker to give the Monarchs a 5-3 lead.

Hofstra came right back when Matt Reistetter singled home Logan Davis to make it 5-4, but Adam Wisniewski came on in relief and got out of the jam with three straight outs, including two strikeouts.

Hofstra then tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on Nasiatka's bases loaded sacrifice fly which scored Scott A'Hara.

Chris Baker led ODU with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI, while Burney had three hits as well in five at bats. The CAA tournament begins Thursday in Wilmington, NC.
