ODU Knocks Off East Carolina, 7-4 Behind Baker And Wright

GREENVILLE, NC--Junior shortstop Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA.) and junior first baseman Chris Baker (Chesapeake, VA.) each knocked in two runs to lead the Monarchs of Old Dominion (27-22) to a 7-4 win over 30th ranked East Carolina (34-18) Tuesday night in front of 2,618 at ECU's Clark-LeClair Stadium.

ODU senior reliever Adam Wisniewski (Norfolk, VA.) established a new ODU single saves record of 14 as he pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Freshman Louis Singleton (Norfolk, VA.) picked up the win(2-2).

ODU got on the board first when Josh Wright doubled home Brandon Shelton (Chesapeake, VA. ), then Chris Baker's sacrifice fly plated Brent Frazier (Fairfax, Station, VA.) for a 2-0 ODU lead.

In the bottom of the first Phillip Clark doubled and scored from third on a wild pitch, and Trent Whitehead doubled and later scored on an ODU error to tie the game.

In the third inning after back-to-back hits from Joey Burney's (Gloucester, VA.) RBI groundout plated Baker to give ODU a 3-2 lead and senior right fielder Nate Hartman (Orlando, FL.) followed with an RBI groundout to scored Sizemore for a 4-2 lead. ODU upped it to 5-2 as Baker singled home Shelton in the fourth inning.

Josh Wright singled home Kenny Stoneback (Colonial Heights, VA.) in the sixth inning for a 6-2 lead. ODU added another In the seventh on Edgar Hernandez' two-out double which brought home Shawn Sizemore (Newport News, VA.).

ECU scored in the sixth on RBI single by John Wooten and sacrifice fly by Jack Reinheimer, to but the lead to 6-4, but ODU's Dean Ali came in to get a double play and get the Monarchs out of the jam. ODU's defense turned three double plays on thenight.

Shelton and Wright each had three hits, while Frazier and Baker had two hits each for ODU. THe Pirates were led by Clark and Zach Wright with three hits each.

ODU closes out the regular season when it travels to Hempstead, NY to take on Hofstra in the final three CAA games of the season before the conference tournament
