Monarchs Pound Out 12 Hits But Lose To Mason, 10-8

NORFOLK, VA-- George Mason (16-23-1/4-15) defeated Old Dominion, 10-8 Friday night in CAA Baseball at theBud Metheny Baseball Complex. ODU is 19-20 overall and 11-8 in the CAA.

The Patriots second baseman Christopher Cook knocked in two runs and shortstop Brig Tison one run to break a 7-7 deadlock in the topof the seventh. George Mason reliever Chris O'Grady picked up the win as he pitched 5.2 innings of relief, striking out six, and allowing four unearned runs on the night. At one stretch he retired eight of nine ODU batters. The win was George Mason's first CAA road win.

ODU out hit Mason, 12-11 led by Brandon Shelton and Nathan Hartman with three hits each. Shortstop Josh Wright and catcher Josh Tutwiler alsohad two hits each while first baseman Chris Baker knocked in two runs for the Monarchs. Brent Frazier scored three runs for ODU. On the mound,junior reliever Louis Singleton pitched two scoreless innings.

ODU scored two runs in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Chris Baker toplate Shelton and Brent Frazier later scored on a Patriot throwing error.

The roared back in the fourth inning and took a 7-5 lead on RBI hits by Shelton,Shawn Sizemore and Frazier's groundout RBI. The other two runs scored on an error.

The Monarchs final run came in the eighth when Chris Baker's groundout RBI plated Brent Frazier.

Five Patriot hitters, Chris Cooke, Brigg Tison, Dan Schafferman, Blaise Fernandez and Zack Helgeson had two hits each and all but one starter scored at least one run in the game for Mason.

The two teams play again on Saturday at 4 p.m.
