RICHMOND, VA--Edgar Hernandez had two hits and an RBI, but the Rams of VCU defeated the Monarchs, 13-1 Saturday afternoon at the Diamond. ODU is now 13-15 overall and 6-5 in the CAA, while VCU is 10-15 overall and 4-4 in the CAA.
VCU pitcher Kyle Haynes scattered four hits and gave up just one run through eight innings of work for his fourth win of the year. He fanned seven Monarchs and walked no one.
Paul Nice put VCU on the board first with an RBI single that plated Michael Cheatham. Bill Cullen then followed with a two-run single which scored Kyle Sutherland and Nice to give VCU a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
In the bottom of the third Chris Ayers singled home Taylor Perkins and John Lenherr scored on an ODU error. The Rams added another unearned run in the fourth.
The Monarchs got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Edgar Hernandez singled home senior outfielder Nate Hartman who doubled with two outs. Edgar Hernandez led ODU with two hits on the day.
Bill Cullen, Taylor Perkins and John Lenherr each had three hits for VCU, while Chris Ayers and Cullen both knocked in three runs.
The third and final game of the series is Sunday at 2 p.m.
