NORFOLK, Va.- Lisa Bernardini scored three goals and the Old Dominion University women's lacrosse team never trailed as they hung on for a 9-8 win over Drexel Friday night at the Powhatan Sports Complex.

After taking a 6-4 lead into halftime, the Lady Monarchs grabbed a 7-4 lead on a free position shot goal by Rebecca Hartrum and increased the lead to 8-4 on Sarah Wright's second goal of the night, also off a free position shot.

Drexel battled back with two-straight goals from Charlotte Wood and Alyse Maiden, but the Lady Monarchs regained the two-goal cushion with a goal from Clara Flangan. Wright drove down the center and and a pass to Flanagan who was able to shoot it past the keeper for the 9-6 lead.

The Dragons came back again as Kaitlin Harris scored with five minutes to go and Wood scored with 12 seconds left, but Kelli Joran's last second shot from the right side was stopped by Sarah Geary to ensure the ODU victory.

Drexel opened the first half scoring with a Joran goal 35 seconds in but ODU got on the board 27 seconds later when Flanagan scored when she received a pass from behind the net from Bernardini and knocked it home.

ODU took its first lead of the game Wrights first goal of the night, also from an assist by Bernardini. ODU would not trail the rest of the night.

A Wood goal tied the score at four but Bernardini scored her third of the night to stake ODU to a 5-4 lead and Meredith Rogers scored with just 12 seconds remaining in the half to give ODU a 6-4 halftime advantage.

With just three minutes gone in the second half, Drexel had an opportunity with an emtpy net as a foul was called on Geary, but Wood's free position shot attempt was blocked by Carolyn Burns.

Bernardini led ODU with three goals and two assists while Wright and Flangan had two goals apiece.

Wood led Drexel with three goals.

The game was delayed 30 minutes due to two of the referees being stuck in traffic.

The Lady Monarchs are back in action Sunday afternoon when they host Hofstra at 1 p.m.
