SPRING PRACTICE UPDATE: Two Minutes & Red Zone

SPRING PRACTICE UPDATE: Two Minutes & Red ZoneSPRING PRACTICE UPDATE: Two Minutes & Red Zone

April 13, 2011

Head Coach Bobby Wilder chimes in on what the Monarchs have been working on since Saturday's scrimmage and gives an insight on what to expect at this Saturday's scrimmage.

SPRING SCRIMMAGE:
Like the previous Saturday, the Monarchs will once again hold an open scrimmage at Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium on April 16th at 1 p.m. As mentioned in the video, the Monarchs will be working on specific field zones, two-minute drills, and game-like situations with the special teams.

WEDNESDAY'S TWO-MINUTE DRILLS:
The two-minute drill saw the defense up by two points and the offense starting its drive at the defensive 40 with 1:10 to go and one timeout remaining.

On the first set, Mario Crawford was Thomas DeMarco's intended target on the first three plays and pushed the ball up a total of 15 yards. Saftey Devon Simmons then put pressure on DeMarco to get rid of the ball, but the rising senior signal caller managed to connect with redshirt receiver Antonio Vaughan to move the chains to the 25. The defense responded pushing back the line of scrimmage as Craig Wilkins came flying in for a sack. The next two plays did not have the offense advance, forcing Jarod Brown to hit a field goal to win it for the offense.

The second set also resulted in Brown having to hit a field goal after the offense was unable to move downfield. The defense won the second set after Browns kick went wide right. Among the defensive stops was defensive end Alex Johnson getting into Rashad Manley's passing lanes.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
The Monarchs' special teams unit worked on punt assault and kick returns. Wednesday's scrimmage ended with a lively one-on-one kick return drill.

RED ZONE STATS:
As Coach Wilder mentioned, he's looking for the Monarchs' percentages in the red zone to improve. Offensively last season, his squad scored on 43 of its 56 times inside the opponent 20, with 32 of the scores coming from touchdowns. Conversely, on the defense, the Monarchs gave up 28 scores of the 38 times the opposition was in the red zone. Twenty-two of those 28 scores were touchdowns for the opponent.

Here's a more in-depth look at the Monarchs in the red zone last fall:
