NORFOLK, VA-- Joey Burney knocked in two runs, but Towsondefeated the Monarchs, 5-2 behind the pitching of Charlie Cononie and three relievers who scattered five hits and fanned 12.
The loss ended Old Dominion (17-17/9-6) three-game winning streak.
ODU took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run RBI single by designated hitter Joey Burnie (Gloucester, VA.) which plated shortstop Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA.) and fristbaseman Chris Baker (Chesapeake, VA.).
In the second inning Austin Harclerode doubled home Brian Wyman and with two outs Hunter Bennett tied the game with a double to knock in Harclerode.
In the fourth, Towson's Hunter Bennett singled home Steve Rice and Nick Natoli's plated Dominic Fratantuono on a groundout to make it 4-2. The Tigers fifth run came in the seventh on an RBI double By designated hitter Andrew Parker which scored Ben Winter.
Towson pitchers issued 10 walks on the day to go with the 12 strikeouts, but ODU left 12 runners on base, including two in the third, fourth and seventh innings. Cononie, is second in the CAA behind ODU's Kyle Hald in strikeouts. He fanned eight in six innings today to give him 64 strikeouts in 50.1 innings of work. Tyler Bugna, Spencer Patton and Christian Duclos pitched the final three innings without allowing an ODU run. Duclos picked up his second save of the year.
Josh Wright led ODU with two hits to improve his batting average to .328. He is hitting .404 in CAA games. Andrew Parker, Brian Wyman and Hunter Bennett each had two hits for Towson.
ODU returns to action on Tuesday night when they host Longwood at 6 p.m.
