NORFOLK, VA--Penn State (6-4) scored five runs in the top of the 11th to defeat Old Dominion (7-6),6-1 Tuesday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
ODU took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Chris Baker (Chesapeake, VA.,) scored on a Penn StateOutfield error.
The Nittany Lions tied the game In the ninth as Bobby Jacobs groundout plated Joey DeBernardis fromthird with one out. PSU then erupted for five in the 11th highlighted by and RBI hit from Jacobs and a two-run single by Luis Montesino.
Chris Baker led ODU with two hits, while freshman starter Dean Ali (Chesapeake, Va.) pitched six scoreless innings,allowing just three hits, one walk and four strikeouts in a no decision. On the other side, PSU reliever Ryan Ignaspicked up the win as he pitched 4.2 of shutout ball with just three hits, one walk and two strikeouts. ODU left eight on base, while Penn State left nine.
Louis Montesinos, Joey DeBernardis, Bobby Jacobs and Elliot Searer each had two hits for Penn State.The second and final game of the weekday series is Wednesday at 3 p.m.
