BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech scored five-straight second half goals to pull away from Old Dominion University women's lacrosse, topping the Lady Monarchs 18-10 Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg.

Old Dominion (1-5) scored on a free position shot by Rebecca Hartrum to pull within three at 10-7 early in the second half.

Virginia Tech (7-4) increased its lead to 13-7 before Lisa Bernardini made it 13-8 with a free position shot goal. The Hokies followed that goal by scoring five-consecutive goals to put the game out of reach.

Emma Kriss and Tracy Reed added tallies for the Lady Monarchs in the last minute to make the final score 18-10.

Virginia Tech grabbed the early lead, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the contest.

Bernardini got Old Dominion on the board by picking up the draw control and racing down the left side of the field and firing a shot to the lower right past the Hokie goalie to make the score 2-1.

The Hokies scored on a goal from Morgan Widlake but ODU cut the lead to 3-2 on a goal from Clara Flanagan. Alyssa Dragon drove to the middle of the field and found Flanagan to the right of the goal where she threw it under the goalie's stick for the goal.

After a Hokie goal made it 5-2, Bernardini drove in between two defenders and fired a shot past Alex Gale to put ODU back within two at 5-3.

Virginia Tech increased its lead to 8-3 with three-straight goals.

Meredith Rogers got ODU back on the board and within four with a shot from the right side that snuck inside the right post. Rogers cut the gap to three with another drive from the right side, this time over the goalie's left shoulder.

Julie Heaps scored for VT with just over a minute to go in the half to give the Hokies a 9-5 lead.

Tracy Reed cut the gap to 9-6 five seconds before halftime accepting a feed from Bernardini in front of the net and putting it in the back of the net.

The Lady Monarchs are back in action on Wednesday, March 30 when they return home to take on Virginia at 7 p.m.
