ODU Takes Series From JMU with Doubleheader Split

HARRISONBURG, VA-- Joey Burney's sacrifice fly scored Josh Wright to break an 8-8 tie and give ODUa 10-8 CAA victory over James Madison in game two of a doubleheader. The Dukes won game one behind Jake Lowery who hit two homers and knocked in six runs.

The victory for ODU wins the series for the Monarchs against the Dukes and ends JMU's streak of11 straight CAA series wins.

In game two, ODU jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Joey Burney's followed with a two-run homer to give ODU a 5-1 lead. Chris Baker led off the fifth with a solo shot, his sixth of the season. Josh Tutwiler (Bridgewater,VA.) then doubled home Hartman.

In the sixth Baker doubled home Shelton to tie the game at 8-8. Joey Burney's sac fly gave ODU the leadBack and Nate Hartman's double knocked in Baker for a 10-8 lead.

JMU scored in the second Conner Brown doubled home Tyler McFarland. David Herbek hit his 11thhomer of the season with Lowery aboard in the third, tying Lowery for the national home run lead.Cole McInturff doubled home Bradley Shaban then Matt Tenaglia slammed a three-run homer in the fifth to put JMU up 8-7 with McFarland and Townsend aboard.

ODU's relief core shut down the Dukes the last four innings. Freshman Dean Ali (Chesapeake, VA.)went three innings and senior reliever Adam Wisniewski (Norfolk, VA.) completed the deal in the ninthfor his sixth save of the season.

Joey Burney's also knocked in three runs in gametwo.

In game one JMU jumped out early in the first inning on a two-run homer by David Herbek in the first inning with Cole McInturff aboard. It was Herbek's 10th homer of the year.

Tyler McFarland hit his second homer of the year, a solo shot to lead off the fourth inning. Jake Lowery hit his 10th homer of the season in the fifth with McInturff aboard to make it 5-0. Johnny Bladel finished the scoring in that inning with an RBI single to score Herbek. Lowery then hit a grand slam homer inthe sixth, for his nation's leading 11th of the season. Valadja walked only two and fanned five in theseven innings of work.

ODU got on the scoreboard in the seventh on senior rightfielder Nathan Hartman's (Orlando, FL.) RBI single which plated Shawn Sizemore (Newport News, VA.). ODU scored in the eighth on Brandon Stahl's (E. Norwich, NY.) RBI groundout.

The Monarchs turned a triple play in the bottom of the seventh. Hartman caught Herbek's fly in foulterritory, then threw to Hernandez who threw toBrent Frazier (Fairfax Station, VA.) , back to Hernandez (Puerto Rico) who tagged out Shaban then threw to Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA.) to get McInturff. ODU turned a triple play last year at Elon. The Monarchs are off until their three-game CAA series at VCU beginningFriday at the Diamond.
