NORFOLK, VA--William and Mary edged the Monarchs of Old Dominion, 4-3 Friday night in a pitchersBetween last year's first team All-CAA hurlers, Matt Davenport and Kyle Hald.

ODU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer from first baseman Chris Baker (Chesapeake, Va.) with senior catcher Edgar Hernandez (Puerto Rico) aboard.

Jonathan Slattery singled home Ryan Brown to cut the lead to 2-1 in the third. The Tribe then tookA 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth on a two-run double by Tadd Bower which scored Ryan Williams and Jonathan Slattery, followed by a double from Chris Forsten which plated Bower.

ODU added a run in the sixth on a solo homer from freshman designated hitter Joey Burney (Gloucester, VA.). The Monarchs had runners on second and third with one out, but were unable to score. The Monarchs left 11 runners stranded.

Davenport picked up the win, fanning eight with two walks and four hits through seven innings. BrettKohler pitched the final two innings for the save with five strikeouts for the Tribe. ODU senior lefthander Kyle Hald (Springfield, VA.) pitched seven innings for ODU, striking out seven with three walks in his first loss of the season. Ben Verlander pitched two scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts.

The two teams play again on Saturday at 2 p.m.
