CAA Swimming and Diving Championship Video Recap Day 3
FAIRFAX, Va. -- Senior April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.) and junior Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) did it again at the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships. Barrientos claimed her third 100 back title, while Arnason brought home his second 100 back title to highlight Monarch and Lady Monarch action on day three of the championships.
The Old Dominion men's team is tied for third place along with William & Mary having accumulated 345.5 points through day three action. Nine-time defending CAA champion UNC-Wilmington still leads the field with 465 points with host George Mason in second with 400 points. Delaware trails both the Monarchs and Tribe sitting in fifth place with 343 points.
The Monarchs had five top eight individual finishes on day three, highlighted by Arnason's title in the 100 breast and sophomore Jason Brame's 400 IM record, in addition to two top eight times recorded by a pair of relay squads.
Arnason, who entered this year's conference championships with nine All-CAA honors to his name claimed his second CAA 100 breast title with an NCAA "B" cut time of 53.55. The junior Icelandic Olympian was just .07 seconds shy of resetting his own ODU and CAA record.
Senior Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) placed second in the 100 back clocking with a time of 50.28. Ramkvist, last year's champion in the event, was edged out by Austin Witherow of host George Mason who took the title with a time of 49.25. During the prelims, Ramkvist posted his personal best with a time of 50.20, the second fastest finish in the ODU record books.
The ODU men had a pair of top eight finishers in the 200 free. Freshman Daniel Camozzo (Herndon, Va.) took second by hitting the wall in a time of 1:38.57, narrowly missing out on the top time by .11 seconds. Camozzo's time was not only his personal best of the season, but second fastest Monarch time in the books. Also featured in the finals of the 200 free was freshman Sidni Hoxha (tirane, Albania). Hoxha, who yesterday captured the league title in the 50 free, placed eighth finishing the event in a time of 1:40.96
Sophomore Jason Brame (Lynchburg, Va.) was also another top eight finisher for the Monarchs setting a new Monarch benchmark in the 400 IM. Brame took third in the 400 IM with a time of 3:54.88, surpassing the previous ODU record of 3:56.96 set by John Wenham in 1996.
In the relays, the Monarchs' 200 medley relay team of Mikael Ramkvist, Arni Arnason, junior Bikir Jonsson (Keflavik, Iceland), and Sidni Hoxha swam to third place finish in a time of 1:30.01, the second fasted ODU record in the logs, and the 800 free relay squad of Daniel Camozzo, Jason Brame, freshman Dogus Akay (Izmir, Turkey) and senior Kris Hagg (Skovde, Sweden) took fifth logging a time of 6:46.79.
The Old Dominion women's team meanwhile sits in fifth place with 263 points through day three action. Three-time defending champion Towson leads the pack with 454 points, followed by James Madison in second with 447.5 points and UNC-Wilmington in third with 367.5 points. Just ahead of the Lady Monarchs in the points standings is William & Mary with 273 points in fourth, while ODU is 13 points ahead of sixth place and host George Mason's 250 points.
The Lady Monarchs had five top eight individual times led by new ODU records by April Barrientos , junior Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland), and Kimberley Rashleigh (Sydney, Australia) in addition to a new record set by the 200 medley relay team.
Barrientos swam her way to her third 100 back title resetting not only the ODU record, but her own CAA record as well. Barrientos claimed the title in a time of 54.44, replacing her previous record-setting mark of 54.75, and posting a NCAA "B" cut time.
Junior Erla Haraldsdottir gave the Lady Monarchs another record with her second place finish in the 100 breast. Haraldsdottir, who swam in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, collected a NCAA "B" cut time of 1:00.46 resetting her own record of 1:01.15 in the event captured earlier this season. Haraldsdottir was edged out of the title by the CAA record holder, Ashley Danner, who won the 100 breast with a NCAA "A" cut time of 59.97.
The Lady Monarchs had a pair of swimmers in the finals of the 400 IM. Sophomore Kimberley Rashleigh finished fourth in a time of 4:21.54 and managed to shatter the ODU record in the prelims with her time of 4:21.48. She reset the previous top time by a Lady Monarch in the event of 4:23.41 set by Kara Fichtorn in 2001. Junior Maddie Stiles (Fairfax, Va.) finished right behind Rashleigh in the 400 IM taking fifth clocking in with a time of 4:23.12, the second fastest time in the ODU record books.
Sophomore Jessica Hubert (Newport News, Va.) also made a finals appearance for the ODU women swimming to an eighth place finish in the 100 fly with a time of 57.42. During the prelims, Hubert hit the wall in a time of 55.99, the second fastest Lady Monarch time ever.
In the relays, the Lady Monarchs' 400 medley relay team of April Barrientos, Erla Haraldsdottir, freshman Malin Esktrand (Halmstad, Sweden), and junior Emma Forbes (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) placed fourth with an NCAA "B" cut time and ODU record of 1:41.99. They teamed to reset the previous mark of 1:42.12 set in 2009.
Additionally, the 800 free relay squad of freshman Abby Vance (Raleigh, N.C.), Emma Forbes, Kimberley Rashleigh, and Maddie Stiles took seventh with a time of 7:34.30.
The Monarchs and Lady Monarchs also had six swimmers in day three's consolation finals.
On the men's side, freshman Andrew Crocket (Toano, Va.) had a pair of top 16 finishes. He took 11th in the 100 fly (50.39) and 12th in the 100 back (51.14). Birkir Jonnson came in 10th in the 100 fly (50.36), Dogus Akay placed 13th in the 400 IM (4:04.77), and Kris Hagg took 16th in the 200 free (1:43.76).
For the women, Abby Vance took 11th in the 200 free (1:52.33) and freshman Elizabeth Huggin (Poquoson, Va) placed 11th in the 100 back (56.84).
Competition at the conference championships concludes tomorrow with the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly men's 3 meter diving, and the 400 free relay. You can follow along with live results available here.
