NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University held Northeastern to a school record low 34 points en route to a 49-34 win Wednesday night at the Ted Constant Center.
ODU (11-3/2-1) trailed 8-4 at the 11:27 mark of the first half before going on an 18-0 run, holding Northeastern (4-10/0-3) without a basketuntil 55 seconds remained in the half.
With the win, head coach Blaine Taylor passed Bud Metheny (1948-65) to becomeODU's winningest men's basketball coach with 199 career victories.
Frank Hassell led the Monarchs in the first half with 10 points.
Northeastern battled back in the second half and cut the lead to 30-26, but Trian Iliadis nailed a three-pointer on ODU's next possession and the Monarchs rolled off 13 straight to the blow the game open, with the help of six Frank Hassell points.
Hassell finished with a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds while Iliadis chipped in 11. Kent Bazemore added a career-high 11 assists to go along with seven points and four rebounds. His 11 assists tied the Constant Center record held by Troy Nance (against Delaware) on Jan. 15, 2003. Ben Finney only scored two points, but dished out three assists, blocked three shots and grabbed seven rebounds. Hassell also blocked three shots and had threesteals.
Jonathan Lee led Northeastern with 11 points.The 34 points by Northeastern eclipsed the 35 by Toledo back on Nov. 16, 2007 here in the Constant Center.
ODU shot.413 (19-46) from the floor, while the Huskies shot .333 (14-42). Hassellwas a perfect seven-for-seven from the floor as he ranked seventh in the CAA infield goal percentage which now improves to .573. Iliadis who came into the contestranked seventh in three-point field goal percentage went thre-for-three to raisehis three-point field goal percentage to .455.
"I have been blessed and very fortunate over the years working with great peopleas well as good continuity on my staff, said Taylor. "I am so appreciative of everyone who has helped me along he way here at ODU."
Taylor is now 199-106 in his 10th season, followed by Bud Metheny at 198-163 from 1948-65, and Paul Webb at 196-99 from 1975-85.
