Swimming & Diving Heads To Quad Meet

FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving teams are back in the water this weekend at the Jim McKay Natatorium to compete against George Mason, Army, and American.

The ODU men enter Saturday's meet 4-1 overall after having their nine-meet win streak dating back to last season halted with a 153.5-146.5 loss to East Carolina last weekend.

The Monarchs had eight first place times in the loss with Sidni Hoxha (Tirane, Albania) and three-time CAA Swimmer of the Week Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) each with a pair top times in individual events. Hoxha claimed the top times in a pair of freestyle events. The freshman Monarch won the 50 free in a time of 21.10 and the 100 free with a time of 47.45. Arnason meanwhile posted the top times in the 200 breast, clocking in with a time of 2:07.43, and the 200 IM, by hitting the wall in a time of 1:53.04. Hoxha and Arnason also teamed up with senior Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) and junior Birkir Jonsson (Keflavik, Iceland) in the 200 medley to record a first place time of 1:33.26.

Last year at the quad meet, the ODU men defeated American, (215-77), Army (151.5-146.5), and George Mason (153-145) with seven first place times - six individual and one relay. Leading the way was Arni Arnason with four top times on the day in the 100 and 200 breast, as well as the 50 free and as a member of the 200 medley relay team.

The ODU women meanwhile enter Saturday at 5-4 following their 182-116 setback to the Pirates.

The Lady Monarchs had five first place finishes against the Pirates led by sophomore Jessica Hubert (Newport News, Va.) claiming victory in both butterfly events. Hubert, won the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.70 and took the top spot in the 100 fly by logging a time of 58.21.

At last year's quad meet, the ODU women picked up wins over American (197-102) and Army (194-106), but fell to George Mason (168-131). They recorded six first place times led April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.) in the backstroke.

The ODU Swimming and Diving teams will return to the pool on Saturday, January 29th hosting N.C. State in their not only the final home meet of the year, but the final meet of the 2010-11 season before heading to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships.
