Swimming & Diving Falls to East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Both the Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to East Carolina on Saturday at Minges Natatorium.

The ODU men had their nine-meet win streak dating back to last season halted with a 153.5-146.5 loss. The Monarchs fall to 4-1 in their first loss of the 2010-11 season. Meanwhile while the ODU women fell to 5-4 with a 182-116 setback to the Pirates.

Both East Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams were each receiving votes in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America poll.

The Monarchs had eight first place times in the loss with Sidni Hoxha (Tirane, Albania) and three-time CAA Swimmer of the Week Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) each with two top times in individual events.

Hoxha claimed the top times in a pair of freestyle events. The freshman Monarch won the 50 free in a time of 21.10 and the 100 free with a time of 47.45.

Arnason meanwhile posted the top times in the 200 breast, clocking in with a time of 2:07.43, and the 200 IM, by hitting the wall in a time of 1:53.04.

Hoxha and Arnason also teamed up with senior Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) and junior Birkir Jonsson (Keflavik, Iceland) in the 200 medley to record a first place time of 1:33.26.

Other Monarchs claiming top times their events were freshman Daniel Camozzo (Herndon, Va.) in the 200 free (1:43.95), senior Josh Kinas (Reston, Va.) in the 100 breast (58.13), and Mikael Ramkvist in 100 back (52.64).

The Lady Monarchs had five first place finishes against the Pirates led by sophomore Jessica Hubert (Newport News, Va.) claiming victory in both butterfly events.

Hubert, a sophomore, won the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.70 and took the top spot in the 100 fly by logging a time of 58.21.

Other first place finishers in Saturday's meet for the Lady Monarchs included sophomore Danielle Naylor (Swinton, England) in the 1000 free (10:27.35), senior April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.) in the 100 back 56.90, and sophomore Kimberley Rashleigh (Sydney, Australia) in the 200 IM (2:09.44).

The ODU Swimming and Diving teams will return to the pool when they travel to Fairfax, Va. for a pod meet featuring Army, American, and CAA rival George Mason on January 22nd.
