RICHMOND, Va. - The Old Dominion women's basketball team will be looking for its 22nd consecutive victory over Richmond when the squads face off at the 9,071-seat Robins Center Sunday at noon.
Old Dominion (4-3) will continue its tough non-conference schedule, ranked as the 15th toughest by CollegeRPI.com, against the Spiders, out of the Atlantic 10, that are coming off a 68-53 win against VCU last Sunday.
The former Colonial Athletic Association rivals will be facing for the 46th time overall, but the first time since 2001. After dropping three of the first four all-time meetings, ODU has won 21 consecutive against Richmond to lead the series 22-3.
The Lady Monarchs are 40-9 all-time against teams from the A-10, including a dominant 60-35 win over George Washington at the Constant Center Wednesday. Old Dominion forced 22 turnovers and held the Colonials the 26 percent shooting for the game. GW's 35 points were the lowest scored against ODU since Delaware State tallied only 28 on Dec. 20, 2007.
Senior Tia Lewis posted her second double-double of the year with a game-high 15 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Sophomore Jo Guilford netted a career-high 13 points, while senior Shadasia Green had seven points and eight rebounds.
Old Dominion, which dropped to No. 6 in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll, has yet to win away from home this season.
Richmond (5-4) has dropped three of its last four games, but two of those losses came at the hands of nationally-ranked opponents. The Spiders nearly upset No. 12 Georgetown on December 1, falling 65-64 in Washington D.C.
Guard Brittani Shells paces Richmond with 21.0 points per game, which ranks 16th nationally. The senior, who ranks No. 4 on Richmond's all-time scoring list with 1,656 points, has led the Spiders in scoring in all but two games this season.
