NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion women's basketball team stayed hot on Thursday evening, cruising past North Carolina A&T, 79-65, at the Ted Constant Center. Junior Tia Lewis posted a game-high 15 points and sophomore Jackie Cook recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Old Dominion (2-0), coming off its season opening win over Atlantic Coast Conference foe Georgia Tech on Sunday, led for all but 14 seconds and built its lead up to as many as 29 points late in the second half.
Senior Alena Voronina posted a career-high 14 points and classmate Jasmine Parker chipped in 11 in the win. Jaquayla Berry led North Carolina A&T (1-2) with a game-high 20 points.
After North Carolina A&T scored the first bucket of the game, Old Dominion rattled off 11 straight points to go up nine at the 17:02 mark. The Aggies cut the first half deficit to just four (16-12) midway through the first stanza, but the Lady Monarchs would break the game open from that point.
A Voronina lay-in with just over five minutes remaining in the opening period capped a 15-5 ODU run and put the Lady Monarchs up 31-17. After North Carolina A&T got to within nine (33-24), Old Dominion closed the half on a 8-0 run to go into the intermission up 41-24.
The Aggies tallied nine of the first 15 points out of the break to close to within 14 points (47-33), but the Lady Monarchs would take control during the remainder of the contest. Leading 62-43 at the 10:48 mark, ODU went on a 11-1 spurt in which five different players scored. The run was capped with a Cook triple that gave the Lady Monarchs a 73-44 advantage.
North Carolina A&T would close the gap late, but get no closer than 12 the remainder of the game.
Old Dominion now prepares to make its first road trip of the season as the Lady Monarchs travel to NC State on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest.
