NORFOLK, Va. - Jasmine Parker hit a pair of free throws with 4.6 seconds remaining in the game to give Old Dominion a come-from-behind 65-63 win over Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
Five Lady Monarchs hit for double-figures, led by Parker's team-high 13 points. The senior also dished out a game-high six assists for ODU. Junior Tia Lewis chipped in 11 points and hauled in a team-high seven rebounds in the win.
Georgia Tech (1-1) took its largest lead of the game at 48-38, but ODU (1-0) responded with a 15-5 run to tie the game at 53.
After the Yellow Jackets took a 61-59 lead, Parker knotted the score once again with a driving layup.
After each team made a bucket to tie the score at 63, Parker started a drive from the left wing and pulled up at the foul line where she was fouled. The senior hit both foul shots to give ODU the two-point edge.
On the ensuing possession, Georgia Tech's Tyaunna Marshall drove the length of the court and was fouled by Parker with 0.4 seconds left. Marshall missed her first shot and purposely missed the second, but the rebound was tipped away by Lewis as time ran out to secure the ODU victory.
Sophomore Jackie Cook registered 12 points, while senior's Alena Voronina and Shadasia Green each were in double-figures with 11 and 10 respectively.
Georgia Tech started the game pressing from the opening tip and a 10-0 Yellow Jacket run midway through the opening half gave them a 15-5 lead. After the squads exchanged buckets, ODU bounced back with an 11-2 run and a Lewis free throw brought the Lady Monarchs to within one (19-18).
Old Dominion took its first lead since the opening bucket on a Cook three-pointer with 24 seconds remaining in the first stanza of play. Georgia Tech then hit a jumper on its next possession from the left wing, but ODU raced up the court and Green drilled a triple as time expired to send the Lady Monarchs into the intermission with a 32-30 edge.
The Lady Monarchs will remain at home for their next game against North Carolina A&T, which is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18.
