NORFOLK, Va. - 20th ranked Georgetown went on a 13-2 run to take their first lead of the second half at 54-51 and held on for a 62-59 win at the Ted Constant Convocation Center Friday night in Norfolk in front of a sellout crowd of 8,457.
ODU built its largest lead of the night at 49-41 with six minutes to go, capped by a Kent Bazemore three-pointer and a pair of free throws from Darius James, but the Hoyas responded with a 13-2 run, finished off with a three-pointer by Chris Wright, to take a 54-51 lead with three minutes to play.
The Monarchs cut the lead to one with two free throws by Ben Finney, but Jason Clark put Georgetown up four with a three-pointer.
Old Dominion stayed in the game, as Trian Iliadis made a free throw to pull ODU to within 62-59. The Hoyas' Austin Freeman missed the front end of a one-and-one to give the Monarchs' one last chance, but Darius James' last ditch three-pointer fell off the rim.
The first half was extremely tight, as neither team held more than a two point lead until ODU went on an 6-0 with eight minutes to play. The spurt was started with a lay in by Chris Cooper and ended on a jumper by Bazemore. The Monarchs stretched the lead to eight, the largest lead of the first half on Bazemore's second-straight jumper, but Georgetown fought back to cut the lead for a halftime score of 25-19.
Hassell, Finney and Bazemore led ODU with 13 apiece while Finney grabbed 10 boards for a double-double. Frank Hassell added eight rebounds and blocked threeshots, while Darius James led the game with five assists. Kent Bazemore had three steals and Trian Iliadis added two.
Wright led the Hoyas with 19 points, while Clark added 18 with Freeman chipping in 17. The trio scored all but eight of Georgetown's 62 points.Julian Vaughan led the Hoyas with seven rebounds, while Thompson, Freeman, Vaughan and Wright each had three assists.
Georgetown shot .429 (24-56) from the floor, while the Monarchs were .404 (21-52).ODU outrebounded the Hoyas, 41-33, but Georgetown hit .381 (8-21) treys on the night, seven-for-11 in the second half. ODU was .250 (3-12) from three.
The loss snaps ODU's 23 game home winning streak, which was the fourth longest in the country.The series is now even at three games each.
During the game, ODU athletics retired the jersey of baseball standout Justin Verlander ('04) of the Detroit Tigers, and recognized former standout pitcher Dan Hudson ('08).
The Monarchs return to action on Monday when they host High Point at 7 p.m. in the Constant Center.
