NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's swimming team topped the nine-time defending Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champions Saturday afternoon at the J.C. "Scrap" Chandler Pool. The ODU men defeated UNC-Wilmington, 166-129, to snap the Seahawks 10-meet win streak against opponents from the conference dating back to the 2007-08 season.
The ODU women meanwhile fell to the Seahawks, 161-138, but did earn a 177-118 win over the University of Richmond.
On the men's side, the Monarchs improved to 1-0 with nine first place finishes.
Four Monarchs finished with a pair of victories including Jason Brame (Lynchburg, Va) in the 500 and 1000 free, senior captain Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) in the 100 and 200 back, junior Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) in the 100 and 200 breast, and newcomer Sidni Hoxha (Tirane, Albania) in the 50 and 100 free.
Also helping the Monarchs' to the win over the Seahawks was a first place time by Daniel Comozzo (Herndon, Va.) in the 200 free and the 400 yard medley relay squad.
The women, meanwhile, moved to 1-1 on the year and were paced by seven top times in the meet.
Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland) and Jessica Hubert (Newport News, Va.) were the multiple first place finishers for the Lady Monarchs. Haraldsdottir took the top times in both the 100 and 200 breast, while Hubert touched the wall first in both the 100 and 200 fly.
Other top performances for the Lady Monarchs included April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.) with a first place time in the 100 back, Danielle Naylor (Swinton, England) with the top time in the 1000 free, and the 400 medley relay.
The ODU women's swimming and diving team returns to action on Saturday, October 30th in a home meet with Radford. The men are idle until Nov. 5th when they take on the College of Charleston and William & Mary in the annual pod meet.
