NORFOLK, Va. - The No. 19 Old Dominion field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision against No. 2 North Carolina Saturday afternoon as the Lady Monarchs wrapped up the home portion of their schedule.

Old Dominion (9-10, 6-1 CAA) outshot North Carolina 11-10 and grabbed an early lead, but the Tar Heels prevailed with goals in each half to improve to 17-1 on the year.

The Lady Monarchs got on the scoreboard first in the 29th minute after sophomore midfielder Julie Hodge converted a penalty stroke. Classmate Danielle Clutter attempted a shot that beat the UNC keeper but illegally hit the foot of a Tar Heel defender, garnering the Lady Monarchs the stroke.

UNC responded before halftime executing on a penalty corner. Katie Ardrey and Teryn Brill set up Marta Malmberg for the blast which tied the game entering intermission.

Just over eight minutes into the second half the Tar Heels took their first lead. Junior Taryn Gjurich deflected a crossing pass from teammate Elizabeth Stephens for the game-winner.

Old Dominion pulled goalkeeper Devon Seifert with just over 10 minutes remaining to gain an extra player on offense and the move nearly paid off. The Lady Monarchs applied late pressure and had a flurry of shots in the final minutes, but none could find the back of the cage to force overtime.

Seifert ended the contest with a game-high six saves. UNC goalkeeper Jackie Kintzer registered five stops for the Tar Heels.

The Lady Monarchs wrap up the regular season tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a trip to CAA rival William & Mary. Old Dominion would need a win and a Drexel loss against Delaware to secure the top seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament.
