BATTLE OF THE HAMPTON ROADS BRIDGE TUNNEL:
The Monarchs embark on their third road trip this season - although they won't be going very far. The ODU Football team will be trekking a mere 15 miles, going across the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and Chesapeake Bay, to take on Hampton.
ABOUT HAMPTON:
The Hampton Pirates enter Saturday's game with a 5-2 overall record and 2-0 mark at home this season. After dropping a 33-0 contest with the FBS's Central Michigan, the Pirates rattled off five-straight victories before the win-streak was halted last weekend with a 10-7 setback to nationally ranked South Carolina State.
Hampton currently ranks sixth among all FCS schools in pass defense allowing opponents just 142.29 yards in the air. Also defensively, senior linebacker Brandon Peguese is tied for fifth nationally in sacks, averaging at least one per game and is also tied for eighth in tackles for loss, avearging 1.75 per contest. Senior defensive lineman Kenrick Ellis is also 11th in the TFL category.
Offensively, the Pirates' ground attack is led by Antwon Chisholm, who averages 76.2 yards per game and 5.9 yards per carry. He has logged three touchdowns thus far. In the air, quarterback David Legree is posting 131.6 yards per game and has thrown for seven touchdowns and three interceptions. Legree has been connecting with Javaris Brown and Donte Davis. Both have 20 receptions on the year with Brown leading the way at 41.3 yards per game and three TD receptions. Davis is averaging 36.6 yards per contest and has logged two touchdowns.
ON THE ROAD:
ODU is currently 5-1 on the road in their young history and 2-0 in 2010. In their inaugural season, the Monarchs went 3-1 on the road with wins at Jacksonville (28-27), Savannah State (38-17), and VMI (42-35). The lone setback away from the friendly confines of Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium was a 34-29 loss at Fordham. Following today's contest with the Pirates, only one other road game awaits the Monarchs in a return date with North Carolina Central for the 2010 season finale on November 20th.
HE'S STILL NUMBER ONE:
Redshirt sophomore Jonthan Plisco continues to lead the FCS in punting averaging 45.7 yards per punt. He has totaled 1310 yards on 29 punts with 11 of those punts reaching a distance of 50 yards or more.
AND WE'RE NUMBER ONE HERE TOO:
The Monarchs are number one in the nation in kickoff returns this week averaging 26.77 yards per return in the category. Freshman Colby Goodwyn ranks seventh in kickoff returns averaging 30.38 yards per return. The rookie Monarch has made 21 returns over the course of the Monarchs' seven games so far, totaling 638 yards.
PUTTING THE "D" IN DEFENSE:
Craig Wilkins, J.J. Williams, and Fred Credle each forced Georgia State fumbles last Saturday. The three forced fumbles ties the mark for the most in a game. The Monarchs also had three last season against Campbell.
Additionally, the four fumble recoveries - Alex Arain, Donald Smith and two by Wilkins, were the most by the Monarchs in a game thus far. The previous high of three came last season in a loss at Fordham.
Also, the Monarchs' 10 pass break-ups were the most by the team. Led by Cowart's three, ODU surpasses its previous high of nine against Presbyterian last year.
BREAKING-UP IS HARD TO DO:
T.J. Cowart has registered three pass break-ups each in games in three of ODU's seven games played so far in 2010. Not only did he have a trio against the Panthers last Saturday, but he also had them against William & Mary and Gardner-Webb, tying for the most in a game by a Monarch. Cowart has interrupted opponent quarterback throws 13 times in his two years at Old Dominion as the Monarchs' leader in the stat.
FINDING THE OPEN MAN:
Monty Smalley led the receiving corps last weekend with 61 yards on nine catches. The nine catches are the most by a Monarch in a game. The previous high was eight by Reid Evans in the 44-13 victory over Campbell back on September 11th.
THROUGH THE UPRIGHTS:
Jarod Brown's 44-yard field goal in the 34-20 victory over Georgia State on October 23rd was his longest this season and the second longest field goal in the brief 18 game history of the ODU program. Drew Hareza still holds the record having converted a 48-yard attempt in the historic 2009 opener against Chowan. Brown has made seven of his nine field goal attempts this year.
ON THE MEND:
Center Jeremy Hensley will miss the remainder of the 2010 season after suffering a broken ankle against #14/#16 Cal Poly back on October 9th. Hensley had started all 17 ODU contests to date at center. Taking over duties is sophomore Brandon Carr, who made his first collegiate start at the position last week against Georgia State. Also helping to bolster the o-line was the return of sophomore Jack Lowney to the line-up. Lowney missed the pre-season and the first part of the 2010 season with a foot injury. Against the Panthers last weekend, he played all but one snap at right guard.
ANOTHER MILESTONE:
Quarterback Thomas DeMarco (Palm Desert, Calif.) surpassed the 1,000 career rushing mark at Monmouth on September 25th with 14 yards on 10 carries in the 35-21 win against the Hawks. To date, DeMarco has totaled 1126 yards on 238 attempts. Next on the career list is running back Mario Crawford who enters Saturday's contest with 933 yards on 179 carries.
12th MONARCH MOMENTS:
There may be 11 Monarchs on the field, but the 12th Monarch is in the stands. Thanks to all the noise of being "Loud and Proud" from the 12th Monarchs at Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium, the opposition was charged with 41 penalties last season and 36 so far in 2010.
