NORFOLK, Va. - Sophomore Maartje van Rijswijk recorded a career-high three scores and the Old Dominion field hockey team tallied more goals than any team has this season against No. 2 Maryland, but the Terrapins prevailed 7-5 Friday evening.

Senior Alyschia Conn and sophomore Danielle Clutter also netted goals for the Lady Monarchs, who fall to 7-8 on the year.

Maryland, which was led by Katie O'Donnell's two goals and three assists, improves to 13-1.

Both teams were striking on all cylinders offensively in the first half as the squads combined for nine goals in the opening period.

With the score tied 2-2, the Terps tallied three consecutive goals to go up three. An Ali McEvoy penalty corner capped the run and put Maryland up 5-2 at the 21:23 mark.

The Lady Monarchs fought back though and cashed in two goals before halftime. Van Rijswijk earned a one-on-one chance against the keeper and blasted a shot in, and just over two minutes later, Clutter scored off a deflection.

Leading by only one in the second half, Maryland started to control play in its offensive zone. The Terps outshot ODU 20-2 and out-cornered the Lady Monarchs 11-0 in the second stanza.

The stellar second half play of junior goalkeeper Devon Seifert kept Old Dominion in the game. Seifert registered 10 saves in the second period and 13 total in the game.

After Maryland posted the first two goals of the second half to push its lead back to three scores, Van Rijswijk completed her hat trick in the 67th minute to cut the Terps lead to the final, 7-5.

Old Dominion welcomes No. 16 Duke to the Powhatan Sports Complex on Sunday for a 1 p.m. clash. The Lady Monarchs topped Duke, 2-1, earlier this season in Durham, N.C.
