HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The 19th-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team tallied three goals in the first 28 minutes of play and held on for a 3-1 win at Colonial Athletic Association foe Hofstra Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Old Dominion (7-7, 4-1 CAA) has now won six of its last seven games and moves into a tie with VCU for second in the league standings.
Sophomore midfielder Danielle Clutter got ODU onto the board early, scoring off a penalty corner at the 9:46 mark. Seniors Loran Hatch and Paige Clutter picked up assists on the opening goal.
At the 20-minute mark, sophomore Julie Hodge picked up her second goal of the season when she scored off a penalty stroke.
The Lady Monarchs extended their lead to three before halftime when Hatch notched her team-high 14th goal of the season. Paige Clutter assisted on Hatchs' goal and now has a team-best 14 assists.
Hofstra got on the board in the second half when Arielle Williams posted her 11th goal of the season off a penalty corner. Although the Pride outshot the Lady Monarchs 7-6 in the second period, they could get no closer.
Junior goalkeeper Devon Seifert, who improves to 6-2 since moving into the starting role, recorded six saves in the win.
Old Dominion will step out of conference next weekend and host No. 2 Maryland on Friday and No. 14 Duke on Sunday. The matchup with the Terrapins is set for 5 p.m. at the Powhatan Sports Complex.
