BOSTON, Mass. -- For the second time in three games and just the seventh time in school history, the Lady Monarchs (3-9, 1-1 CAA) allowed their opponent to reach 100 points as Northeastern University (6-7, 1-1 CAA) did so for the first time in program history in a triple overtime victory over ODU, 100-94. It was the first time in school history the Lady Monarchs were stretched to triple overtime, as they fell to the Huskies for the first time in program history as well.
Old Dominion looked primed for its second straight CAA road victory after the first twenty minutes of play, as the Lady Monarchs were shooting 58.6% from the field (17-29) and had a 10-point lead. ODU had held Northeastern to just three field goals in the final 13:15 of the half.
However, in the second half, the Huskies powered back, forcing 14 Lady Monarch turnovers and shooting 46.7% from the field (14-30). Northeastern was led by Kim Carr in the second, scoring 12 points and grabbing six rebounds. Old Dominion looked to have the final possession of the half with Northeastern up one, 69-68, but a Jasmine Parker turnover and Jessica Canady foul put Carr on the line with just 10 seconds remaining. Carr knocked down the first but missed the second, giving ODU a chance to tie.
After the rebound from Tia Lewis, she found junior Kquanise Byrd on the left side, who snuck the ball between two defenders to Canady, who had run the length of the floor for the lay-up with just 3 seconds left on the clock to force overtime.
Senior Jessica Canady had a terrific game, breaking out for her first double-double since offseason knee surgery, as the veteran forward dropped in 18 points and hauled in a team-high 12 rebounds. She did most of her damage after halftime, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds after the break in 26 minutes of action. She played 36 minutes in the game.
ODU struggled to take care of the ball, though, committing 29 turnovers in regulation, leading to 26 Husky points.
The game was stretched to extra time for just the 14th time in program history for Old Dominion, and the first time since the dramatic overtime victory against Virginia in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
Northeastern continued their hot shooting, getting a quick lead in the first overtime period, up 74-70 after a pair of layupds from Afreyea Tolbert. ODU junior leading scorer Shadasia Green would turn it on, though, and hit a 3-pointer to pull ODU back within one and then knocked down a jumper on the next possession to tie it up.
Northeastern's leading scorer, Brittany Wilson, would put NU back up by three with 2:31 remaining on an old-fashioned three-point play on a foul by Parker, but Parker would come down on the next possession and tie it back up with a long three-pointer from the top of the circle, two steps back of the men's 3-point line.
With the score tied, the teams would go into a second overtime where Canady would continue to make clutch plays for the Lady Monarchs. Canady hit four straight free-throws to pull Old Dominion back within two, leaving room for freshman Carolann Cloutier to knock down the game-tying jumper leading to a third overtime period with the score tied at 88.
The turnovers would catch up to ODU in the final overtime period as Northeastern finally took advantage. After ODU tied it at 90 with 3:23 remaining on a Canady jumper from the right side, Northeastern would force four turnovers in the remaining time and clinched the victory with a 10-4 run. In all, the Lady Monarchs committed 40 turnovers, including 11 in extra time leading to nine points off turnovers. For the game, Northeastern had 35 points off turnovers.
The Huskies got career-highs from Kim Carr, with 27 points and 14 rebounds, and from Jamie Conroy, with 20 points. It was also the first double-digit scoring gave ever for Afreyea Tolbert, dropping in 10 points. Brittany Wilson rounded out the double-digit scoring night with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
ODU got double digits from four different players also, led by Shadasia Green's 21 and Jessica Canady's 18 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Tia Lewis finished just one rebound shy of a double-double, collecting 13 points and nine boards. Jasmine Parker rounded out the scoring with 11 points, adding four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Though Old Dominion shot nearly 59% from the field in the first, the shooting cooled and the team finished at 44.3% from the field on 35-of-79 shooting. Northeastern saw their percentage rise in every period, finishing at 44.9% from the field on 35-of-78 shooting.
The game was tightly contested throughout, with seven lead changes and a tie score on 14 different occasions. ODU outrebounded NU with a season-high 50 rebounds compared to Northeastern's 45, but Northeastern committed just 26 turnovers compared to ODU's 40.
The Lady Monarchs conclude the four-game road swing and return home for the CAA home opener this Sunday afternoon against reigning CAA champs Drexel University at 2:00 p.m. ODU is home for a pair, as they will also host George Mason next Thursday, January 14.
