WAYNESVILLE, NC-- ODU Sophomore Samantha Morrell (North Kingstown, RI.) finished tied for second at the 12th annual Great Smokies Women's Intercollegiate Tournament. Morrell, the 2010 CAA Rookie of the Year finished one stroke behind tournament champion Jaime Ritter of UAB. ODU also broke a number of its school records.
Ritter carded a four-under 140 to edge a two-way tie for the runner-up position between Hannah Coles of Radford and Old Dominion's Samantha Morrell, both of which shot a three-under, 141, over the two-day event. Morrell fired 70-71 for 141.
Lady Monarch freshman Kimberley Bradbury (Derbyshire England) tied for 12th after shooting 145. She fired a 71 today. As a team, ODU placed seventh with a 592. Jacksonville State won the event by eight strokes over second place Radford.
Morrell is continuing where she left off during the summer where she won the NewEngland Women's Golf Championship and advanced to match play at the US Women's Amateur Public Links Championships.
Morrell's 141 is a new school mark for 36 holes, besting the old record set by Ashley Davis (147) in the 2005 Springlake Invitationals. The team shot a new18 hole record of 293 in the second round, besting the old mark of 297 set at Draper Valley in 2006. The 36-hole team score of 592 is a new school mark bestingthe 602 shot at the Great Smokies in 2008.
The Lady Monarchs compete i the Seatrail Intercollegiate, Sept. 24-26 in Sunset Beach, NC.
