DURHAM, N.C. - Senior Loran Hatch tallied her team-high fifth goal of the year to lead the Old Dominion field hockey team to a 2-1 win at No. 9 Duke Sunday afternoon, the Lady Monarchs' second win over a ranked team on the road this season.
Playing its eighth straight game against a ranked opponent and sixth contest of the year on the road, the Lady Monarchs improved to 2-6 overall. Duke falls to 4-4 on the year.
After a scoreless first half, Old Dominion broke the stalemate when sophomore Danielle Clutter netted her first career goal. Clutters tally came in the 38th minute off a penalty corner set up by seniors Alyschia Conn and Paige Clutter.
The Lady Monarchs increased their lead to 2-0 in the 55th minute when Hatch deflected a penalty corner shot to record her fifth goal of the season.
The Blue Devils responded just over a minute later as junior Rhian Jones converted a penalty corner shot for her second goal in as many games. Junior Stefanie Fee and freshman Emmie Le Marchand assisted on the score to cut the ODU lead to one with just under 15 minutes to play.
However, Old Dominion was able to prevent a game-tying goal in the final minutes of play to escape with a one-goal victory.
Junior ODU goalkeeper Devon Seifert made a game-high four saves to pick up her first career win.
Old Dominion will next travel to Boston, Mass. to open up Colonial Athletic Association play at Northeastern on September 24. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
