CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina, the defending national champions and current No. 1 team in the country, used two late goals to break a tie game and pick up a 3-1 victory over the visiting Old Dominion Lady Monarchs Friday evening at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Senior Paige Clutter scored her first goal of the season to lead the Lady Monarchs, who fall to 1-6 on the year.
North Carolina, which improves to 6-0 on the year, has now outscored its opponents 27-3 in 2010. However, the two-goal differential in the game was the smallest for the Tar Heels all season.
Carolina kicked off the scoring in the 13th minute when sophomore Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany collected the rebound after an ODU save and tallied a goal to put her team up 1-0 with her fifth tally of the season.
The Lady Monarchs answered quickly as Clutter deflected a Loran Hatch shot from the left side on a penalty corner less than two minutes after UNC's goal.
The score remained knotted at 1-1 for nearly 46 minutes of play, until a Jen Slocum rebound goal put the Tar Heels up 2-1. UNC added another goal late when sophomore Caitlin Van Sickle tipped in a ball from senior Elizabeth Drazdowski to make the final 3-1 with just over a minute to play.
ODU Junior goalkeeper Devon Seifert made her first career start Friday and put forth a solid effort with nine saves.
The loss breaks the all-time series tie between ODU and UNC. The Tar Heels now hold a 34-33-2 record in matchups between the two storied programs.
Old Dominion will next take on No. 9 Duke on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Lady Monarchs picked up a 3-2 overtime victory in Durham in 2009.
