NORFOLK, Va. - Despite grabbing an early lead off sophomore Maartje van Rijswijk's first goal of the season, the No. 17 Old Dominion field hockey team gave up two second half scores en route to a 2-1 loss to No. 12 Ohio State Sunday afternoon at the Powhatan Sports Complex.

The victory was the first ever for Ohio State over Old Dominion in four all-time tries. The loss drops the Lady Monarchs to 1-5 on the year and the Buckeyes improve to 4-2.

Old Dominion, despite playing one of the toughest schedules in the country, has hung tough in the first halfs of nearly every game. Sunday's game was no exception as the Lady Monarchs struck first in the opening stanza of play.

Sophomore Danielle Clutter was in possession of the ball on a fast break and the midfielder drew the goalkeeper out and crossed the ball from right to left to a wide open van Rijswijk who found the back of the open cage.

The goal is van Rijswijk's first career score as a Lady Monarch.

Second half's continued to plague ODU though as Ohio State outshot the Lady Monarchs 11-3 and earned seven penalty corner opportunities in the frame.

Trailing by one in the 54th minute, Ohio State's Jena Cacciatore scored on a breakaway chance after ODU nearly scored off a penalty corner. The goal, assisted by Arielle Cowie, knotted the game at one.

Less than five minutes later, the Buckeyes converted on a penalty corner blast from the top of the circle to take a 2-1 lead. OSU's leading goal scorer Aisling Coyle tallied the game winning goal with teammates Aisling McKeon and Berta Queralt picking up assists.

Junior goalkeeper Marla Petriello played a solid game, picking up eight saves on the day.

Old Dominion will now embark on its second four-game road trip of the season starting with a trip to North Carolina next weekend. The Lady Monarchs will take on No. 1 UNC on September 17 and battle No. 10 Duke two days later.
