IOWA CITY, IA -- Old Dominion coxswain Allison Giegerich (Egg Harbor, N.J.) was among 18 collegiate rowers invited to attend US Rowing's Women's National Team Freshman Camp taking place this week at the University of Iowa. Giegerich was one of two coxswains invited to the 2010 camp.
The Freshman Camp is for student-athletes with elite level potential and aspirations, but have only one or two years of rowing experience. The goal is to expose those rowers to the National Team experience, training 2-3 times per day, row in all boat categories, learn technical and physiological basics, and train with athletes of a similar caliber.
"Allison has a bright competitive future ahead of her as a coxswain if she is determined to chase this goal," said ODU head women's rowing coach Dan Garbutt. "This camp will be a great experience for her and I look forward to the impact it will have on our squad when she returns."
Giegerich, who will be entering her second season with the ODU women's rowing team this fall, was the coxswain of the Lady Monarchs' Varsity 8 squad that advanced to the Grand Final of the Occoquan Sprints for the first time in the young program's history. She was also the cox of the Freshman Novice 8 boat that won the Head of the Hooch on the Tennessee River last fall.
