BROOKLINE, MA.--Junior righthander Les Williams pitched a complete game four hitter to lead the Huskies of Northeastern (10-24/3-13) to an 8-2 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Old Dominion (17-28/5-11) Friday afternoon.
Williams issued no walks and fanned six batters to even his record to 3-3 on the season. Centerfielder Frank Compagnone led the Huskies with two hits and two RBI and Pete Castoldi also knocked in two runs. Tony DiCesare, John Puttress and Jon Leroux each had two hits for Northeastern.
Putress hit a solo homer to left field in the seventh, while Compagnone hit a two-run shot in the sixth inning for the Huskies.
ODU scored in the fifth and ninth innings. Sophomore second baseman Josh Wright came home on an RBI single to rightfield by Nate Hartman in the fifth inning. In the ninth, Leftfielder Donnie Corsner led off with a triple then came home on a sacrifice fly by senior thirdbaseman Jake McAloose.
The Monarchs sophomore first basemen Chris Baker singled in the fourth inning to extend his hitting streak to 19 games which ranks him 12th nationally.
ODU's Kyle Hald who ranked second in the CAA in ERA and led the league in strikeouts and complete games took the loss. He pitched seven innings allowing eight hits, six runs, two walks and six strikeouts.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 12 noon.
