NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion pounded out five homeruns and Kyle Hald (Springfield, Va.) picked up his eighth win of the year as the Monarchs (20-29/7-12) defeated Delaware (23-23/5-14), 14-4 Friday evening in a CAA matchup.
Hald, a junior lefthander fanned seven and walked two in 8.2 innings of work to run his record to 8-4 with a 2.80 ERA and a CAA leading 90 strikeouts in 93.1 innings. Hald held the Fightn' Blue Hens scoreless until the fifth inning when Dave Anderson hit a solo shot,followed by a two-run homer by Ryan Cuneo.
Sophomore firstbaseman Chris Baker (Chesapeake, Va.) hit two homers and knocked in five runs on the night. He extended hishitting streak to 23 games thus far this season which is currently the eighthlongest in the nation.
Junior rightfielder Nathan Hartman (Orlando, Fl.) also hit two homers and had three hits on the night, while senior Thirdbaseman Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, Va.) hit a homer and knocked in three runs. McAloose and Baker are tied for the team lead with eight home runs each.
Ryan Cuneo, Hanke Yates and Dave Anderson each had three hits for Delaware.
Prior to the game McAloose was presented the Harry Postove memorial award and the Chesapeake Athletic Club's Ralph Guzzo Award as the Monarchs top player.
Game two of the CAA series is Saturday at 4 p.m.
