FAIRFAX, VA--Old Dominion's Donnie Corsner (Virginia Beach, VA.) led the game off with a solo homer and junior lefthander Kyle Hald (Springfield, VA.) combined with sophomore Brett Harris (Chesapeake, Va.) for a shutout as the Monarchs defeated George Mason, 1-0 Friday afternoon in CAA play. ODU is 14-20 overall, 3-4 in the CAA, while the Patriots are 17-10 overall and 3-4 in the CAA.
The Monarchs opened the game with a solo home run by leftfielder Donnie Corsner (Virginia Beach, Va.), his fourth of the year. That run would stand up the rest of the game.
On the mound, Hald (6-2) and Harris combined four 12 strikeouts in the Monarchs second shutout of the Season. Hald shutout LaSalle earlier in the season and has held opponents to two runs or less in his last four outings.
Hald who leads the CAA in strikeouts fanned eight in seven innings of work and lowered his ERA to 2.04 overall and 1.14 in CAA games. Harris, pitched two innings of relief with four strikeouts andto pick up his first save of the season. Harris was the CAA's Rookie of the Yearlast year.
George Mason's Kevin Crum suffered his first loss of the season. He pitched seven innings with six strikeouts, three its and two walks.
The Patriots threatened in the fifth with the bases loaded with one out, but McAloose threw tothe plate to get Nick Allen and Hald struckout Mark Hill. In the third Mason had Hill on third and Shane Davis on second with one out, but Hald fanned the next two batters. Mason also had two runners on in the eighth and ninth but Harris shut them down for his first save of the year. In all, George Mason stranded 12 runners.
ODU threatened in the top of the eighth when Corsner led off with a triple but reliver Anthony Montefusco pitched out of the jam retiring the next three hitters.
Mark Hill and Nick Allen led George Mason with three hits each, while Corsner had two extra basehits for ODU. Game two is Saturday at 2 p.m.
