W&M Defeats ODU, 9-5

Williamsburg, VA-- The Tribe of William and Mary (20-14/5-6)defeated the Monarchs ofOld Dominion (16-23/4-7), Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park in a Colonial Athletic Association game.

ODU was led by Chris Baker with two hits and three RBI which included a two-run homer in the fifth. Junior outfielder Nathan Hartman also knocked in two runs for the Monarchs.

The Tribe was led by Jonathan Slattery with three RBI, while Derrick Osteen, Chris Jensen and Slattery each had three hits. Tribe reliever John Farrell picked up his fourth save of the season as he fanned seven with two walks and one run.

The Tribe scored first with the bases loaded, as R. J. Archer (W&M's quarterback) walked to force home Jonathan Slattery in the second inning. In the third, ODU tied the game with an RBI single from Chris Baker which scored Donnie Corsner.

W&M came back to re-take the lead in the third as Derrick Osteen scored on an ODU error and Jonathan Slattery's groundout plated Tadd Bower. ODU's Nathan Hartman slammed his fourth homerun of the season, a solo shot in the top of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, William and Mary's Archer tripled home Ryan Williams and then scored on Osteen's single to make it 5-2.

In the top of the fifth, Chris Baker belted his third homer of the year with Jake McAloose aboard to cut the Tribe lead to 5-4. The Tribe added a run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Derrick Osteen.

In the ODU seventh, Nathan Hartman's sacrifice fly plated Chris Buss, but again the Tribe answered as Chris Jensen scored on Ryan Williams RBI bloop single. William and Mary added two more runs in the eighth on a two run double by Jonathan Slattery.

The third and final game of the series will be Sunday at 1 p.m.
